Build the Future
Ready — Mary McLeod Bethune was born to formerly enslaved parents in South Carolina. As one of seventeen children, she was introduced to hardship early in life. As a young girl she discovered the power of education. Learning to read convinced her that knowledge was the pathway to freedom.
Set — She pursued higher education training as a teacher. Her personal experience shaped a desire to change lives and communities. In 1904, Bethune arrived in Daytona Beach, Florida, with $1.50, a few supplies, and unwavering faith. She opened a small school for African American girls in a rented house. There were no resources, no guarantees, only hope.
Bethune founded a school and changed countless lives because she . . .
Saw Beyond Limitations. She refused to let poverty define possibility.
Started Small but Acted Boldly. One room, a handful of students, and a clear mission.
Built Relational Support. She cultivated donors, partners, and advocates.
Focused on Multiplication. Education was not just for individuals, but for generational impact.
Led with Faith and Determination. Her confidence rested in purpose, not provision.
Grow! — Over time, her small school grew into what is now Bethune-Cookman University. Her vision wasn’t limited by resources. Rather it inspired them. Don’t wait for ideal conditions to begin your dream. Act on your conviction and build something that lasts.
Two Questions
What vision are you delaying because you lack resources?
What step could you take today to begin building anyway?
