Winning Leadership

Ready — During his 26 years (1986–2013) managing Manchester United F.C., Sir Alex Ferguson transformed a struggling club into one of the world's premier sports organizations. Under his leadership, Manchester United won 13 Premier League championships, five FA Cups, two UEFA Champions League titles, and more than 35 major trophies.

Set — Ferguson managed soccer players, of course, rather than workers, but the leadership principles that guided his success are applicable to nonprofit leaders and business executives.

Here’s how Ferguson's leadership principles can help you and your organization thrive over the long haul.

  • Never Stop Rebuilding. Ferguson never became satisfied with yesterday's victories. Even while winning championships, he prepared the next generation of players.

  • Protect Culture.  Ferguson expected every player to embrace the team's culture of discipline, humility, and unity. Talent alone was never enough.

  • Stay Ahead. Ferguson adjusted his coaching methods as the game evolved while never changing his commitment to winning. He improved his approaches while remaining faithful to the team’s core values.

  • Practice Excellence. Ferguson’s teams won through consistent preparation before the final game. Every decision, every volunteer, every method, indeed every detail contributed to his team’s long-term effectiveness.

  • Build Staff. Ferguson surrounded himself with capable assistants who strengthened the organization. Winning always happens through shared leadership effort.

  • Stay Hungry. Ferguson reminded his teams that every season started at zero. Yesterday's victories guaranteed nothing.

Grow! — Winning leadership is built one day, one decision, and one person at a time. Great leaders do more than build successful organizations. They build ones that continue bearing fruit long after they are gone.

Two Questions

  1. How are you developing the next generation of leaders?

  2. What methods have you improved upon this year?
