Ready, Set, Grow!

Holy Resolve

Ready — In the early 1700s, colonial America was spiritually complacent. Churches were formal, sermons predictable, and faith often routine. Into that environment stepped Jonathan Edwards, a young pastor in Northampton, Massachusetts. He believed authentic faith must transform both the mind and the heart. His leadership helped ignite what became known as the First Great Awakening, one of the most significant spiritual revivals in American history.

Set — Edwards combined rigorous theology with earnest prayer and personal holiness. His preaching was not theatrical manipulation but a call to genuine repentance and renewal. Revival spread across the colonies, reshaping churches and communities.

Edwards’ leadership endured because he:

  • Led with Conviction. Edwards grounded his ministry in deep theological clarity. He believed leaders must know what they believe and why they believe it. Conviction anchored his preaching and gave substance to revival.

  • Balanced Mind and Heart. Though a brilliant thinker, Edwards emphasized that true religion engages the affections. He taught that genuine faith transforms desires, not just behavior.

  • Dependence on God. Edwards recognized that revival was not manufactured; It was divinely initiated. He called people to extraordinary prayer, modeling reliance on God rather than personal charisma.

  • Stood Firm Under Opposition. Later in his ministry, Edwards faced conflict within his own church and was eventually dismissed as pastor. Yet he remained faithful to his convictions, choosing integrity over popularity.

Grow! — True leaders do not chase applause; they pursue faithfulness. Effective leaders shape both understanding and passion. Leadership rooted in conviction and humility leaves lasting impact.

Two Questions

  1. Are your leadership decisions grounded in deep conviction or shifting opinion?

  2. How are you cultivating both intellectual clarity and spiritual passion in those you lead?
